Carpet vs hardwood flooring – which is better to add style to your home

hardwood flooring

Carpet and hardwood flooring are the two most common and popular types of flooring. They are entirely different from one another. Your choice largely depends on your personal needs and preferences. Nowadays, most carpets are made of synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester; however, you may still find some made of natural fibres such as cotton or wool.  Carpeting costs per square foot.

Hardwood, on the other hand, is made of felled trees. They are more durable than carpeting, and they add value to your house. If you are looking to renovate your house with an idea to increase the market value, you should opt for hardwood flooring instead of carpeting. This blog discusses how they are different and in what aspects:

Appearance

Carpet offers a wide variety of colours and textures. They are soft to touch, gives off warmth, are suitable for harsh winters. Nowadays, they come in several styles that meet the need for almost any kind of interior.  Hardwood is appealing too because of its woody tone. Its polished tone contrasts well against the furniture and surrounded walls. It creates a bold statement and feels firm.

While both enhance the appearance, hardwood is the most preferred choice. One of the reasons for this is they are more attractive and exquisite than carpets.

Water and heat resistance

Most carpets are highly resistant to spills and water; however, yet it is crucial to prevent water from seeping into the supporting material. Carpets are susceptible to burning cigarettes. They should be kept away from heat.  Wood flooring is sturdy enough in wet or tropical areas. Spills could damage the polish and swell it. Intense heat, similarly, is not good for hardwood flooring too; however, mild burn scars could be fixed with repolishing.

When it comes to heat and water susceptibility, carpet and hardwood flooring are not ideal choices. One could be more damaging than the other in the most humid conditions. While carpet can withstand water damage, moulds and mildew may grow. Burnt cigarette stubs are harmful for both carpeting and hardwood flooring.

Maintenance and cleaning

Cleaning the carpet is easy, but it has to be done frequently. There is no other alternative to vacuuming to clean the carpet. Some spills become absorbed, leaving stains that settle over time. Despite vacuuming, carpets never seem to be clean. Dirt, dust particles, and pet dander get trapped in carpets. Hardwood flooring is much easier to clean. It supports spotless cleaning. Vacuum cleaners will trap dander, hair, and dust particles. In addition, you can give it a wet mop periodically to clean the smallest dust molecules.

There is no doubt hardwood is the best option in a cleaning aspect. Hardwood flooring does not trap dust and dirt and is not too much susceptible to saining. Carpet flooring is tough to clean. They lose aesthetics and appeal over time. If you are allergic to dander and dust, you should always prefer hardwood flooring.

Durability

Carpets are not as durable as hardwood flooring. They are inexpensive to install and last for a couple of years, depending on how you manage to maintain them. It rarely lasts for a decade, even if you have to have professional cleaning occasionally.  Hardwood flooring can last for many decades. They are less expensive to maintain than carpets. Stains could be easily removed after repolishing. If you use good-quality hardwood, you will certainly find it much more durable than carpets.

Hardwood flooring is the best choice over carpeting when it comes to durability. However, if you can afford to change carpets every now and then, they are good, too.

Cost and installation

Carpets are considered less expensive than hardwood flooring. Premium quality carpet could cost you up to £10 per square foot. However, wool carpeting would cost you double. When it comes to installation, it is not easy to do it yourself. It is recommended that you consult professionals.  The price for hardwood flooring varies between £5 and £12 per square foot.  The installation of hardwood flooring is not possible on your own. You would need a professional.

In terms of the installation cost, carpeting flooring is inexpensive undoubtedly. Both require special tools for the installation, so you cannot do it on your own. While the cost of carpet is much lower than hardwood flooring, they could prove to be expensive if you change them frequently.

Hardly does it last for a decade. You should have a budget to get the installation done. In case you still need some money, you can rely on bad credit loans for extremely bad credit people. At the time of using these loans, you should always try to ensure that you will not fall behind on the payment.

Resale value

Flooring plays a paramount role in increasing the value of your property. Carpeting does not add value to your house because it is considered inexpensive and not seen as improvement.  Hardwood flooring reflects sumptuousness. It creates illusion of space. Carpets cannot hold a candle to the luxury that hardwood flooring offers. It is considered a paradigm of prestige.

If you are looking to add value to your house, you should always consider hardwood flooring. Carpeting will never increase the resale price. However, remember that you will need other things in combination with hardwood flooring to increase the market value of your house. Alone, hardwood flooring cannot help you gain a better value.

Comfort

The carpet provides unparalleled comfort. You feel it soft beneath your feet. It is warmer than hardwood and ideal for the winters. Above all, noise does not echo across the walls.  Many people find that hardwood flooring is quite noisy. Every footstep is heard. Despite that, it has one benefit which is it can be easily cleaned. The floor becomes dust and dirt free.

When it comes to comfort related to sound, carpeting is the best choice.

The final thought

Both hardwood flooring and carpeting have their own qualities, but when everything is taken into account, you will find that hardwood flooring is a superior choice.
