The upcoming GPS-based system works by installing GPS devices in vehicles that are linked to the owner’s bank or payment wallet. These devices will track vehicle movement on tolled roads and deduct the appropriate charges directly, based on the kilometres driven.
This method eliminates the need for physical infrastructure like toll booths or scanners, streamlining the entire toll collection process.
How Does It Differ From FASTag?
While FASTag was a significant step toward digitising toll collection by using RFID technology, it still required vehicles to pass through toll plazas and occasionally slow down or queue. The GPS-based tolling system removes this bottleneck, allowing for truly barrier-free travel.
